C. THE HEALTH SERVICE OF MACAO.

The Colony of Macao consists of the peninsula of Macao and the Islands of Tuipa and Colovane. The town and port are situated on the peninsula which is con- neeted with the mainland of China by a narrow neck of land—The area of the penin- sula has been considerably increased by reclamation. Altogether Macao is about 44 square miles in extent.

There is free communication with China by road, by junk, and by steamer.

The department for the control of the public health is the Medical and Sanitary Service under administrative charge of a Medical Director.

The Staff includes six fully qualified Medical Officers all of whom are Military Officers seconded for civil work.

The department is divided into six sections which deal respectively with ad- ministration. statistics. sanitation, laboratories, hospitals and dispensaries and phar-

macy

The Sanitary Bureau or Department of Public Health is under the Director of Hygiene who is also Deputy Director of Medical and Sanitary Services. He is respon- sible for Quarantine and Port Health Work, Vaccination, Measures for the preven- tion and control of Infectious Diseases, Municipal Sanitation, Inspection of Chinese Hospitals, Maternity and Child Welfare, School Hygiene, Town Dispensaries. Pro- paganda, Registration of Births and Deaths and Vital Statistics.

With regard to cases of dangerous infectious diseases-notification and segre- gation are compulsory. Cases are given the choice of treatment in the infectious disease hospital or of leaving the Colony. Practically all choose hospital. The hos- pital itself is a Government Institution where strict segregation is insisted on.

Vaccination is not compulsory except for School Children and in epidemic times when all have to be vaccinated.

Propaganda is carried out in schools and in hospitals, by public lectures. by the distribution of pamphlets and by the posting of bills and notices on the houses.

With regard to Venereal Diseases-there is registration of prostitutes and weekly examinations. There is a lock hospital and there are oblution centres

The Sanitary Organisaiton of Macao is based on modern lines. to be well up-to-date and there is evidence that the Authorities in spite of continual immigration from and exodus to China have the situation well in hand.

The town is clean and well scavenged
